ABOUT carl Opalek
I was raised in Brooklyn and graduated the Cooper Union art school.
In the mid/late 60’s I designed a 16’ mural for the Florida Pavilion at The World’s Fair and illustrated paperback and hard bound book covers. During this period, while living in Manhattan, I became involved in the youth entertainment industry and became the creative director of Youhways Corp. I was responsible for designing, and directing photo shoots, illustrating and art directing magazines, TV productions, concert material and all promotions for the above. It included working with celebrities such as the Jackson Five, the Osmond’s, Andy Williams, the Bee Gees, etc. I also met my wife, Peggy, then and started doing serious painting. I had shows of my fine art in galleries on 57th Street, Madison Avenue, and 5th Avenue, in Greenwich Village and at a bank on John St. in the Wall Street area and elsewhere.
In the early 70’s We were married and I moved to a house in Verona, New Jersey. I had many shows in regional galleries and libraries in Montclair, Cedar Grove, and Verona with favorable reviews in The Star Ledger and The New Jersey Record.
In 1978 we moved to Rockland County NY. I created a new style of illustration in pen and ink. it was satirical in nature and some times humorous. They appeared in Tennis and Ski magazines and in major newspaper ads, trade publications (e.g. an international newspaper campaign with full page ads for Krugerands.) I also had a one man show of my paintings and drawings at the Piermont, NY Town Hall.
In the 80’s and 90’s I became a Creative Director VP with William Douglas McAdams a pharmaceutical advertising agency in NYC. I became a vice chairman on the Arts Council Of Rockland. I designed their logo (used for over 30 years) and their annual report for which my wife, Peggy, did the photography.
About 20 years ago I began creating my illustrations and caricatures on the computer using Photoshop making sure that they looked hand done.
Ten years ago I started working with driftwood taken from the Piermont pier and creating wall assemblages. At the Piermont Library I had an exhibit of them called “Masks and More”. I also had a show of them at ‘The Outside In” Gallery in Piermont. Soon after that I explored the possibilities of creating abstract Fine Art Mandalas on Computer that had an organic look. I showed them as Artist of the Month at the Hopper House museum in Nyack, NY
Over the last forty years I have shown my artwork including illustrations, paintings, assemblages, and digital art in solo and group exhibits in Rockland County, NY. at the Piermont Town Hall, the Piermont Library, Hopper House Museum, Rockland Center for the Arts, the Pomona Culture Center, the Outside In Gallery, the Finkelstein Library, and the New City Library.
Today I am an active member on the Rockland County Art in Public Places (AIPP) Committee. Not too long ago I had redesigned their new logo.
I am currently painting in acrylic on stretched canvas creating largely unique and colorific images. Infusing my bold new characters with unexpected color I have created a personal, and up close interpretation of who and what we are and other compelling ideas.
